On January
27, United States President Obama delivered the annual State of the Union
Address to a joint session of Congress. The speech took place on the floor
of the United States House of Representatives in the United States Capitol.
Behind the president, as typical, sat the presiding officer of the Senate,
Vice President Joe Biden (Senate President), and the Speaker of the House
of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi.
The primary
focal points of the speech were proposals for job creation and federal
deficit reduction. The primary area of common ground between Republican
and Democratic lawmakers, however, was education.
The following
items were discussed by the President as policy changes, legislative initiatives,
and/or goals related to the education of our people and our children:
- Renew the
Elementary and Secondary Education Act;
- Revitalize
community colleges;
- End taxpayer
subsidies to banks for student loans;
- Provide
a $10,000 tax credit for families for four years of college;
- Increase
Pell Grants;
- Forgive
all student loan debt after 20 years (10 years if the student chooses
a career in public service); and
- Cut costs
at colleges and universities.
Childhood
obesity was mentioned as a problem that needed to addressed, and that
an initiative would be headed by the First Lady, Michelle Obama, to do
just that.
